JULY

July already the BBC weather man said that June was a average
month. That as maybe but there were some extremes thrown in with some quite cold days, some very wet days, and some very dry hot days yes a average June in Blighty.
Enough about the weather for June as we are now in July and one announcement for this month is Moorlands Allotments Open Day On July 30th where
you will receive a warm welcome at one of the few allotments in Sandwell to have received the converted green flag award.
You can read all about the open day by going to the EVENTS PAGE or by clicking MOORLANDS OPEN DAY .Please support
Moorlands Allotments by turning up I will be attending to take some photos and
get a story or two for Augusts news letter if you see me stop me and have a
chat about your allotment site and what you would like this web site to contain to make it more interesting to you.

We now have three association allotment sites with their own
dedicated web page on this site to announce events ,post photos ,describe their allotments ,information on all manner of things from plot availability and contact information to personal achievements and generally open up their allotments
to a much wider public than the few who look through the fence at what to a outsider can seem like a secret exclusive world with our high fences and locked gates.
The three association sites whom have their own page are Moorlands, Mesty-Croft
and Tividale.

To take a look at their pages just click on
association sites on the left of this page and the sub headings that open will
take you to any one or all of the sites mentioned. If you would like your site
to have its own page just contact me at the email address at the foot of the
page and I will set it up the same day, easy as that and you don’t have to do
any more than send me the things you want to appear on your page .I will then
put it on to your page for you easy, come join this new inclusive way of communicating
your achievements to the world

chat on the plot

well its official its been the warmest driest spring for 100 years the joy of planting out so early this year was soon replaced by the horror of drought stressed plants on many a eager allotmenteers plot. As i was in turkey for the last two weeks of may I expected to return to a jungle of weeds on my plots only to find that that the lack of rain and the lower temperatures had slowed the expected growth spurt to a very manageable level and after only seven days hoeing I am back in charge and the weeds have been dispatched.

THE SANDWELL SHOW IS DRAWING EVER CLOSER AND A UPDATE AS BEEN INCLUDED ON ''THE SANDWELL SHOW'' PAGE OF THIS SITE.

There is also a article on the news page in regards to the government's plan to abolish the 1908 allotment act with a transcript of David Camrons support for the allotment movement.

May
chat on the plot

Well April was a scorcher and the warmer than normal weather was a double edged sword in the end and the lack of cold frosty weather was replaced with a lack of rain with young plants struggling to get going. That said most plants are at least 2 weeks in front in my garden and at one point I was praying that we didn’t get a late frost, as a great deal of damage would have been done with so much green tender growth exposed. he fleece was at hand just in case.

WATER

This year’s low rain fall should make every responsible
allotment gardener think about the methods of gardening that use less water and comply with our sustainable gardening ethos at Sandwell Allotment Gardeners Association.
Please take a moment to read. save water allotment-water.pdf

May as begun with some well needed rain which is great but
are you harvesting as much rain as you could?

SANDWELL SHOW 2011

Rosemary at S.A.G.A as been busy sending me instructions in
regards to publicising this great event in the Sandwell allotment gardeners
association calendar believe it or not to allot of the general public the activities that occur on a allotment site are a closed book to them or at best a antiquated belief that it’s a bunch of 60 something old men who build ugly sheds out of bits and bobs and grow vegetables that have every known chemical in the local garden centre spayed on them. Believe it or not there are children and quite a few adults in Sandwell that have no idea what food can be grown in the black country. As for the quality of the food grown in our post heavy industrial soils I must admit I was taken aback by the eye popping quality of the exhibited vegetables at last year’s show. Rosemary is right to want the Sandwell Show and more to the point our place within in it to be shouted from the roof tops where we can show off and bring outsiders in to our wonderful world of gardening where we have the chance to sow the seeds for a continuous successive crop of egger allotmenteers to pass on the word and to move the allotment cause on ever upward. So  read about the Sandwell show on the Sandwell show page keep up with information that will appear on that page and pass it on get involved support this FREE,  YES FREE event.

I will finish this month’s update as I do every month by
saying if you have anything you want to share be they pictures ,growing tips, new diseases {plant diseases only please} even web pages you think would be interestingto uses of this site .

APRIL
.

                                               CHAT ON THE PLOT.

I am writing this piece at the latter end of April just a week before the big wedding and the weather as been extremely dry and hot and officially the driest hottest April since records began.Having taken over the editing of the site some three weeks ago I have been looking to add various information that I believe will communicate the associations ongoing program of changes.
The first of these changes being the renaming of the association which was agreed at the last s.a.c meeting. We will now be known as ''SANDWELL ALLOTMENT GARDENERS ASSOCIATION'' S,A,G,A for short. This as been reflected in the name of this web site.
A important change to the allotment competition as also been agreed in a effort to save money without diminishing the quality of this important event in show casing the allotment movement in Sandwell.(more information on )
There as also been agreement to encourage sites to apply for the prestigious ''Green Pennant'' awards.
JUST EMAIL ANYTHING YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE IN THESE WEB PAGES TO THE EMAIL AT THE FOOT OF THE PAGE AND I WILL DO MY BEST TO INCLUDED IT .SEND ME YOUR PICTURES YOUR THOUGHTS YOUR MONEY (well cannot blame me for trying)

kind regards and happy growing till next month.
